Kula Ring – Giving the gift of time

Well a start

After much searching for a name (well, really searching for a domain name that that was possible, but not taken), I settled on kularing. A Kula Ring is a type of gift economy practiced in the Trobriand Islands. This site is the start of my attempt to create a software platform that will allow friends to create their own virtual Kula Ring to exchange gifts of their time.

I have lots of ideas for how to build kularing, but the key thing is to start implementing them. First up, writing my ideas down and working out what works. I guess that is the first gift I get to create.

Just want to point you to 2 online complementary currency exchanges… which put time on the same par as real goods. One of them, which comes out of South Africa, can be found at http://www.community-exchange.org.
Since it appears easy (and free) to set up an exchange on their system — it might make sense to start this way and not get bogged down in developing a software platform. If we find limitations and there is no flexibility with their system, then we can develop an alternative.

The other one is fourthcornerexchange.com, which is in Washington State, developed by someone who had a hand in these exchanges in England. You can watch a 30-minute interview with him here:
